Activating a Disruptive Automaker’s Multi-Platform, Cloud-Based Data Solution
Challenge
An innovator in automotive manufacturing encountered many data-related challenges, including disparate data source integration, volume management, quality assessment, security and compliance.
Outcome
Leveraging AWS’ cloud-based features, we collaborated with the organisation on a solution that streamlines data flow and user experience across multiple domains and platforms.
An industry leader in next-generation automotive experiences leans on a large amount of data, but it needed support in overcoming obstacles related to data integration, quality assessment, security and regulatory oversight. We teamed with the company to jointly build a platform atop AWS that could boost overall end-to-end management and yield improved customer experiences, operationality, innovation and decision-making.
Creating cloud-based automotive efficiency
As a joint effort to build a serverless cloud-enablement prototype with scaling potential, we implemented relevant AWS integrations to address each of our partner company’s concerns:
- Data storage: Data was housed inside AWS S3 to serve as a centralised, scalable data repository. S3 can enable various raw and processed data points to live safely without losing integrity. Additionally, Amazon DynamoDB provides a fast and flexible NoSQL database service for storing and retrieving structured data at any scale. It supports high-throughput and low-latency access, making it ideal for real-time applications and dynamic data interaction.
- Real-time accuracy: AWS Lambda functions as the platform’s execution layer, allowing for on-demand computing power that can process incoming data streams, trigger workflows and perform real-time data transformations. By using Python for data processing, Lambda efficiently handles extract, transform and load tasks to keep data current.
- Data processing and streaming: AWS Step Functions orchestrate the complex workflows, coordinating multiple Lambda functions and other AWS services. This integration keeps processing pipelines robust, fault-tolerant and easy to oversee. For real-time data processing and event streaming, the platform deploys AWS Kinesis Firehose which captures, transforms and delivers streaming data to various destinations for immediate analysis.
- Event hosting: We integrated AWS EventBridge and SNS to facilitate event-driven architectures. With these solutions, the platform can seamlessly communicate between different services and components, manoeuvring data smoothly through the system. EventBridge routes events from various sources, while SNS distributes messages to multiple endpoints.
- Data cataloguing and querying: AWS Glue Crawlers carries out automated data discovery and metadata registration for S3-stored information so it can be analysed. Athena allows for direct querying of data in S3 using standard SQL, providing quick and efficient access to insights without the need for complex data warehousing solutions.
Collectively, these services create a cohesive and resilient serverless architecture that ensures data flows seamlessly from ingestion to analysis, supporting advanced data enablement across multiple domains. Furthermore, all these integrations are supported by robust data governance, leveraging data effectively across aftermarket services to enable manufacturing, logistics and customer interactions.
Data that drives innovation
Since completion, the platform has yielded:
- More than 5 source-system integrations
- Over 10 new data pipelines
- An influx of consumers from different domains and platforms
The final product was a low-cost, high-performance cloud-based data enablement tool that simplified data-driven decision-making for our partner and enables them to continue producing a disruptive product that drives the industry forward.
